Resignation Advice

Where possible, make an effort to keep your resignation simple, positive and professional. Even though at times this can be a tough and difficult situation there are a number of details to keep in mind to make the process as trouble-free, and professional as possible.

Submit your resignation in writing. This allows you to have greater control over the delivery of the message and prevents you from being distracted during discussions of the matter. Writing a letter strengthens your decision rather than using the circumstance to re-negotiate your current situation.

Acknowledge you current employers positively. To your advantage this will show your professionalism and respect of employment thus far. This will also allow for future communication and in an ever-changing industry, you never know when you might encounter former associates later in your career.

Hostile reactions do occur. By submitting your resignation letter at the end of the working day you gain control of the situation and minimize any face-to-face confrontations. When dealing with demanding personalities, it may be sensible to not reveal information on your relocation, simply state that the resignation is for more suitable prospects.

Exit without a scene. You have worked towards a positive resignation. Maintain this by showing the organisation your appreciation of the time you spent with company and of any opportunities gained. Do not use this time to air grievances as it does not achieve anything in the long term. It is better to finish on good terms.
